Lenexa is a city located in Johnson County, Kansas, in the United States. It is Kansas’ ninth most populous city. The city’s population was 57,434 as of the 2020 census. It is the home of Garmin and Kiewit Construction’s regional headquarters. It is bounded to the north by Shawnee, to the east by Overland Park, to the west by De Soto, and to the south by Olathe.

James Butler Hickok made a claim on 160 acres (65 ha) near what is now 83rd and Clare Road twelve years before the town of Lenexa was platted. The claim was filed in 1857, not far from the Kansas River, and approximately 20 miles (32 kilometers) southwest of Westport, Missouri, and the commencement of the Santa Fe Trail. On its way to Santa Fe, New Mexico, the trail passed through this location.

Hickok was elected as one of the first four constables of nearby Monticello Township on March 22, 1858. Wild Bill Hickok later became a scout for the Free-State Army, a sniper, and one of the most famous folk heroes of the American West.

Around the same time that Hickok made his claim, a census of the Shawnee Indians residing in the area was being taken, and Na-Nex-Se Blackhoof was among those recorded. She was the widow of Chief Blackhoof, the second signer of the 1854 treaty that transferred the United States government 1,600,000 acres (650,000 hectares) of the Kansas Shawnee Indian reservation.

The Kansas and Neosho Valley Railroad was founded in 1865 to take advantage of favorable new land laws. It then changed its name to the Missouri River, Fort Scott, and Gulf Railroad and, in 1869, purchased a right-of-way from C.A. Bradshaw in what is now Lenexa, with the condition that a depot be built on the land.
