Overland Park, the second-most populated city in Kansas, is located in Johnson County, Kansas, in the United States. It is one of the four major cities in the Kansas City metropolitan region, and it is also the largest and most densely inhabited suburb of Kansas City, Missouri. The city’s population was 197,238 as of the 2020 Census, with daytime populations topping 220,000 due to commuting.

With a population of 28,085, Overland Park was formally established as a “city of first class” on May 20, 1960. The population increased to 173,250 as of the 2010 census, having nearly quadrupled to 111,790 less than thirty years later. After overtaking Kansas City, Kansas, in the early 2000s, Overland Park formally overtook Wichita, Kansas, as the second-largest city in the state.

According to the city’s annexation map, the traditional greenfield suburban construction is mostly responsible for population growth. When Overland Park attempted to annex another area in 2008, there was a significant uproar from the affected people. With a total land size of 75.37 square miles (195.21 km2), Overland Park currently covers almost the entire length of Johnson County from north to south. Since Overland Park’s growth, state lawmakers have changed the regulations governing annexations to demand a majority vote from the affected inhabitants for any upcoming annexations that cover more than 40 acres (0.16 km2).
