The city of Blue Springs is situated in Jackson County in the U.S. state of Missouri. Blue Springs is situated 31 kilometers (19 miles) east of Kansas City’s city center. Blue Springs is the tenth-largest city in Missouri and the ninth-largest city in the Kansas City Metropolitan Area. There were 58,604 people living there as of the 2020 Census.

The migration of settlers on their westward trip is connected to the history of Blue Springs. The quantity of cool, clear water from a spring of the Little Blue River made the region a desirable resting place for early settlers, hence the name Blue Springs. The location of the city’s Burrus Old Mill Park on Woods Chapel Road is where a grist mill was built and a permanent community established due to the availability of water and the necessity for pioneer supplies.

Franklin Smith, a pioneer resident who moved to Blue Springs from Virginia in 1838, had a key role in the growth of the neighborhood. In 1845, he started the first post office and gave it the name of the well-known springs.

Up until the Chicago and Alton Railroad revealed plans to build a station about a mile east of the original hamlet in March 1878, the community kept expanding close to the springs. The town relocated its center to the location of the new station in order to capitalize on the increased trade that the railroad would bring, and it continued to grow as a rural trading hub. On September 7, 1880, the Jackson County Court authorized Blue Springs’ incorporation, making it the fourth settlement in the county to do so. The oldest establishment in the City of Blue Springs is the Chicago & Alton Hotel, which dates back to 1878 and is situated on Main Street to the west of the train tracks.
